ASHEBORO, N.C. – The City of Asheboro has been awarded a $225,000 Rural Downtown Economic Development Grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce to support streetscape improvements along North Street and Trade Street as part of the ongoing Trade/North Street Infrastructure Project. This multifaceted project, which involves burying all overhead utility lines, replacing all antiquated underground water, sewer, and gas mains, and enhancing street and sidewalk functionality, was conceived in 2021 and has advanced from the conceptual stage through complete design development plans. City officials have been actively working for more than two years to secure funding for this transformative project while also coordinating with property and business owners. Through the unwavering support of the Randolph County legislative delegation, for which the City of Asheboro is exceptionally grateful, the bulk of the project will be paid for by state infrastructure-related grant dollars. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The Rural Downtown Economic Development Grant program helps rural communities strengthen downtown districts through projects that support economic growth, enhance public spaces, and encourage private investment. The funding will be used to improve the appearance and pedestrian experience along North and Trade Streets, creating a more welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and businesses. Asheboro's participation in the North Carolina Main Street Program helped strengthen the City's competitive application. As a designated Main Street community since 2020, Asheboro has demonstrated a commitment to downtown revitalization, economic development, historic preservation, and strategic investment in its downtown district. The partnerships, planning efforts, and ongoing revitalization work fostered through the Main Street Program continue to position downtown Asheboro for growth and success.
The City also recognizes the efforts of staff members who worked diligently to prepare a strong grant application and secure this funding opportunity. Their collaboration and commitment to advancing projects that support economic development and enhance quality of life were instrumental in the City's successful application. The streetscape improvements funded through the grant will complement the larger Trade/North Street Infrastructure Project and support the City's ongoing efforts to invest in Asheboro and the businesses that call it home.
